When to Use HyFIBER?

HyFIBER is suitable for the dietary management of bowel transit disorders. HyFIBER is a low volume, high fibre liquid supplement that contains 12g soluble fibre in each 30ml serving. HyFIBER is ready to use and can be taken orally without the need for pre-mixing, or administered via an enteral feeding tube.

Typical situations where it may be necessary to add fibre into the diet include when patients are not consuming the recommended amount from their normal diet; when patients are being enterally tube fed using a non-fibre containing enteral feed; or when a bowel condition such as constipation or diarrhoea occurs.

Typical reasons why constipation can occur include:

  • Poor or inappropriate diet, resulting in low intake of fibre
  • Decreased gut motility due to condition affecting the bowel, or age-related
  • Neurogenic bowel caused by conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, MS, spinal cord injury
  • The effect of medications on the bowel, such as chemotherapy, opioids used for pain relief, iron supplementation, anticholinergics

Typical reasons why diarrhoea can occur include:

  • Poor or inappropriate diet, resulting in low intake of fibre
  • Decreased gut motility due to condition affecting the bowel, or age-related
  • The effect of medications on the bowel such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, radio-therapy, magnesium supplementation
  • Intolerance to specific foods

How to Use HyFIBER?

HyFIBER should be administered by a clinician or dietitian. Dosage is dependent on the age and medical condition of the patient. HyFIBER is a ready to use liquid and can be added without the need for pre-mixing, directly into hot or cold foods, drinks or supplements. HyFIBER can be administered with enteral tube feeds.

Dosage – It is recommended that the addition of HyFIBER to the diet should be gradually increased to meet individual requirements. Start with 30ml per day for one week, increase to 60ml a day in split doses if required. Bowel medication may need to be adjusted as the dose of HyFIBER is increased.

Enteral Tube Feeding – Flush feeding tube. Administer 30ml of HyFIBER via enteral feeding tube using a suitable enteral syringe. Once infused, flush tube and then continue enteral tube feeding as prescribed.
